A former Radford High School baseball player is returning home to take over the school’s varsity baseball program.
Athletic Director Greg Wade announced this week the appointment of Drew Hill as Radford’s new baseball coach.
Not only is Hill no stranger to the Bobcat diamond as a player but was also the head coach of the school’s jayvee squad. It was the familiarity with the program that drew him to the opening.
“I have a passion for coaching and investing in the lives of young people. I was fortunate to be an assistant coach under the leadership of former coaches Darden Freeman and Greg Ridpath,” he said.
In total, Hill has five years of coaching experience before applying for the job. He graduated from the school in 2013 and almost immediately became a volunteer coach. He has served an assistant coach for three years and then head jayvee coach for the past two.
As a player, he pitched and played first base.
“Just like any coach, my goal is to have a successful program. Through this program, I want our coaches to create a culture of excellence in all we do. I am a coach who wants to see guys become better people through the way they conduct their lives by displaying integrity. Our program will strive to make guys not only winners on the field but in their future endeavors,” he said.
“Creating a culture of excellence holds our coaches and players accountable to one another. Through creating this culture, our coaches strive to see Radford Baseball reach new heights in advancing to conference, regional, and state level competitions.”
Hill is originally born in Kingsport, Tennessee, but moved to Radford when he was three years old.
