Auburn finished as the runner-up in the state Class 1 softball championship last week at Radford University and dominated the all-state team released Tuesday.
Four juniors, Skyler DeHart, Abby Wilson, Emily Scaggs and McKenzie Lawrence, represented Auburn on the list. DeHart was named as a pitcher, while her battery-mate Wilson was first-team catcher. Scaggs was first-team at first base and Lawrence as an outfielder.
Lawrence finished the season with .430 batting average, 30 Runs Batted In (RBI) and six homers. She also had 14 stolen bases.
Scaggs batted .511 this season with 32 RBIs, three home runs and 12 stolen bases. Wilson batted .589, eight home runs and 39 RBIs. She also had 17 stolen bases.
DeHart finished the year with a 23-1 record with her lone loss coming in the state championship game against Tabb. Auburn’s Lacey Bishop and Tori Boyd were named second-team all state.
Wilson also received Region 1C honors as player of the year, while Dehart was the region’s pitcher of the year. Head coach, David Hurd, received coach of the year honors for the region.
Joining DeHart and Wilson on the first-team all-region squad were Boyd, Scaggs and Lawrence.
Second team all-region included Auburn’s Addison Huff and Eastern Montgomery High School’s Erica Shrewsberry.
In baseball, Auburn also had three players named to the all-state list. Outfielder Keith Hunter and pitcher Keith Reed made first team, and second baseman Dylan Akers was named to the second team.
Reed, Akers, Keith and Trevor Miles were also recognized on the all-region first-team. They were joined by Eastern Montgomery’s Aaron Felty.
Second-team all-region honors were also given to Auburn’s Taylor Newcome, Carter Keith and Eastern Montgomery’s J.T. Foster.
Auburn also placed three players on the Class 1 boys’ all-state soccer team. Gage Phillips, Cameron Chestnut and Carter Brockman were honored when the team was announced Wednesday.
Phillips, Chestnut and Brockman were named first-team all-region along with teammate Chase Phillips.
Auburn’s Triston Perry and Jessie Shelor were second-team all-region.
Correction
The Auburn all-state story published June 16 incorrectly listed some of the baseball players’ accolades. The correct selections are Dylan Akers first team, second base; Hunter Keith second team, outfield and Keith Reed second team, pitcher. The Radford News Journal regrets the error.
