Since its launch two years ago, the 100+ Women Who Care NRV has raised in excess of $100,000 for local not-for-profits serving the New River Valley.
To date, members have heard presentations from 21 organizations, learning about various needs throughout the community and how potential contributions would be utilized.
Commencing after the first meeting, the group has been generously supplemented by The Secular Society providing a 50% match of members’ donations up to a total of $5,000 per meeting.
With a current membership of over 100 women from all walks of life, the 100+ Women Who Care NRV meets only four times per year with a current donation of $15,000 per quarter.
Meetings last one hour or less, and members commit to donating $100 per meeting. Three members each present a local not-for-profit, and, following a Q&A session, the organization with the majority of the group’s vote receives at least $10,000 collectively from the membership plus an additional $5,000 from The Secular Society.
These funds are available immediately for the elected organization to utilize. The following quarter, the recipient organization returns to the 100+ WWC to provide accountability regarding the group’s donation.
Eligible organizations must be local and serve the New River Valley, tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and noncontroversial.
“Being able to provide a sizable and immediate donation to not-for-profits right here in our New River Valley every quarter is a powerful way for women to come together and make a big difference collectively,” explained Sarah Black, one of the 100+ Women Who Care NRV co-founders. “Our members join for different reasons, including learning more about organizations serving our area, meeting other like-minded women who are passionate about giving back to the community, and seeing firsthand how a group of people can come together effectively and efficiently to bring about positive changes.”
Valley Interfaith Child Care Center received the majority vote for the 2018 Winter Quarter. VICCC serves young children from local lower-income working families who would otherwise have no desirable child care options. It is fully state-licensed and staffed by credentialed early-childhood teachers with a current enrollment of over 50 children from ages 0-5. All interested women are invited to join the 100+ WWC to support local not-for-profits that make the New River Valley a better place to live.
The group’s membership area includes the counties of Montgomery, Giles, Pulaski, Floyd and the City of Radford.
