During the month of April, the City of Radford hosts its annual scavenger hunt. Participants sign up at the Radford Public Library and pick up a brochure listing locations to visit.
“We also did the scavenger hunt last year with the Radford City Engineering Department to raise awareness about what should and should not go in stormwater drains,” Duncan Hall, technology services coordinator who designed the brochure for the event, said.
The brochure is full of Radford landmark photos, like bridges and hollow trees, and residents have to go out in town to find them while they learn about protecting nature said the brochure.
People take pictures of themselves with storm drains. Kids collect five while adults collect 10.
People of all ages are welcome and encouraged. Pick up a brochure at the public library to get started. Visit the locations pictured in the brochure to win a T-shirt.
Jay Eanes and Jenn Whiteis, from the city’s engineering department, helped plan the event. Eanes designed the Star Wars-themed shirts.
The engineering department aims to help people of all ages understand that stormwater drains move rainwater away from town via creeks and then to the New River, a regional source of drinking water and teeming with animal life.
Clearly, only rain should go down a storm drain.
New to Radford, Hall intends to participate in the hunt.
“It seems like a good way to get out and see some great things,” he said.
