The Radford women’s soccer team placed three players on Virginia Sports Information Directors’ (VaSID) 2017 University Division All-State teams, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Juniors Jasmine Casarez and Jessica Wollmann were featured as members of the First Team while freshman Gabi Paupst makes her debut on the Second Team. This season marks the first time Radford has placed a player on the VaSID All-State first team since 2012 when Tyler Drake and Che’ Brown did it. Rachel Conway joined them as a second team All-State honoree that year.
JESSICA WOLLMANN
Wollmann tallied career highs with seven goals, eight assists and 22 points across 1,421 minutes. She ranked second in the conference in shots and assists, third in points, points per game and goals and even led the conference in game-winning goals with four. Her effort on the pitch earned her two Big South Attacking Player of the Week nods, first team All-Big South, third team All-South Region and now All-State honors.
She also excelled academically, posting a perfect 4.0 GPA with a major in Anthropological Studies and a minor in Biology. The Blacksburg, Va. native has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team, CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, Big South All-Academic Team, and United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-South Region Third Team.
JASMINE CASAREZ
Casarez returns to the VaSID All-State team after earning second team honors in 2016. The midfielder built off her strong sophomore season to produce even better results this fall, starting all 18 games and scoring a team-leading 11 goals that were good for second in the Big South and tied for 22nd in the nation at the end of the regular season. Three of those goals were of the game-winning variety and with one assist, she reached a career-high and team-leading 23 points. The tenacious attacker became the first Highlander since 2008 to reach the double-digit goal mark and has already been recognized as First Team All-Big South and as the Big South Attacking Player of the Week on Sept. 11th.
GABI PAUPST
A newcomer to the Highlander family, Paupst put her name on the map straight out of the gate as a true freshman. Coming down from Canada, the Grimsby, Ontario native scored two goals in her first two contests and was subsequently named Big South Freshman of the Week in August. After starting 17 of 18 games, she finished with five goals, including two off of free kicks, and three assists on the season to be named to the Big South All-Freshman team. Paupst became the first freshman Highlander to score five or more goals in their debut season since 2013. She ranked top-10 in the Big South for points, points per game, goals, goals per game, assists and game-winning goals.
VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a University or conference in the state of Virginia.
