RU women photo _ Destinee Walker led the Radford University women to victory against Presbyterian. She pumped in 20 points in the contest.

After a sensational sophomore season, Radford University’s Destinee Walker continues to rack up the hardware, earning a Virginia Sports Information Director All-State (VaSID) first team nod, the association announced on Wednesday.

The VaSID first team honor is the first under head coach Mike McGuire and the first in program history since the 1988-89 season. Walker joins Stephanie Howard as the only two Highlanders to earn first team honors as Howard is a two-time recipient.

“What a tremendous recognition for Destinee to be named to the VaSID All-State first team,” McGuire noted. “It is impressive that she is only the second player in our program history to be named to the first team and she was the only sophomore named to the first or second team.”

Walker was named to the All-Big South first team in March after scoring double-figures in 26 of Radford’s 33 games, ranking fourth in the league scoring with 460 points at 13.9 points per game. The sophomore tallied seven 20-point performances on the season, including four in Big South play.

Walker finished the season with a 45.4 field goal percentage, ranking third in the league. In addition to her season percentage, Walker shot 45.2 percent in league games. Walker finished with a 39.1 percentage from behind the arc, ranking seventh in program history for a single season.

Adding to her scoring ability, Walker led the Highlanders with 2.3 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game. The Florence, S.C. native grabbed 6.5 rebounds per game, good enough for eighth in the league.

In the Big South Tournament: Walker averaged 10.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 2.6 spg on her way to being named to the all-tournament squad.

The 2016-17 season saw Walker lead the Highlanders in scoring in 20 contests, while leading the team in assists 12 times. Walker paced the squad in rebounding six times on the season. She notched four double-doubles in 32 starts.

“We had a terrific season and Destinee played an impactful role all season long,” McGuire added. “This is a deserving recognition for Destinee and our program.”
