RADFORD – For the past several weeks in Radford, flocks of pink flamingoes have been popping up all over the City of Radford.
The VFW Post 776 Auxiliary held a Flocking Fundraiser, raising money for various projects, including for the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley and Commonwealth Senior Living along with support for VFW Post 776.
“This fundraiser has been awesome,” said Auxiliary President Mallory VanHoy. “It’s different from the normal fundraisers, because we get to meet folks in the community, we brighten people’s day just by putting these silly pink birds in a yard, and we are bringing awareness to our post.
“It feels like no one knows we exist and this is a great way to connect,” she continued. “Radford feels like a town divided, it’s nice to spread some cheer and get folks talking about something other than the money trouble Radford has at the moment.”
VanHoy said between 20 and 30 yards were flocked during the fundraiser, which wrapped up this past weekend.
“We are hoping to do this again in the summer and possibly this winter with something else festive,” she said.
The suggested donation for the flocking was $25. Auxiliary Senior Vice President Cordell McGuff served as Flocking King. The auxiliary is hosting a fall festival in October. More details on the festival will be released soon.
