More than 400 adult runners took part in this year’s Draper Mile run, which took place Friday, Aug. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in conjunction with Blacksburg’s Steppin’ Out Festival.
Specifically, there were 404 finishers this year, plus another 35 kids in the fun run. It was the largest field in the 44-year history of the race, according to Noah Combs, one of the race organizers. The Draper Mile has a long and storied history within the Blacksburg community. The first Draper Mile was in 1982, with 97 participants.
The one-mile course is downhill, and thus unique, giving runners the chance for fast run times. This year’s male winner was Chris Nunn with a time of 4:05 and the female winner was Hannah Long with a time of 4:35.
The Draper Mile run is the seventh race in the RunAbout Sports Race Series. The series consists of 10 races between February and December in the New River Valley. The races range in distance from a downhill road mile to a half marathon.
