Live theatre
At Theatre 101, 200 College Ave., Blacksburg, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (and Sunday, July 19 at 2 p.m.). Director Robyn Berg presents “The Novelist” by Theresa Rebeck. A sharp, contemporary comedy, “The Novelist” explores creativity, ambition, and personal relationships through the story of a writer navigating artistic and family tensions. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Doors open 20 minutes before each performance.

America’s 250th with Patick Henry
At Warm Hearth Village Center, 2387 Warm Hearth Dr., Blacksburg, 1 p.m. Celebrate the 250th birthdate of America with Patrick Henry, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the HearthSong Singers. Nona Gabbert, chapter head of the regional DAR, will host a discussion about their organization and General William Campbell’s role as a Revolutionary War hero, key in our region. In attendance will be Patrick Henry Jolly, a fifth great grandson of Patrick Henry. He will present his ancestor’s famous speech, “Liberty or Death” and discuss Red Hill, the National Memorial for Patrick Henry. The HearthSong Singers will present a short program of patriotic songs. Following the discussion and Q & A, there will be cake and refreshments.
Yard sale for charity
Several households on Eighth Street in Radford (a couple blocks of Eighth Street going east from the Wadsworth St. stoplight plus small portion of Berkeley) will be holding a yard sale with a portion of the proceeds supporting Elf Shelf; 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

At the Radford Public Library, 1 p.m. Genealogy class taught by Rebecca Novy of Novy Genealogy. Go beyond basic names, dates and places – and dig into the real stories behind your family tree. Rebecca will guide you through sources to help uncover a broader picture of your ancestors’ lives, including the gossip, scandals and crimes that make history come alive. Radford City Council meeting
The Radford City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the Radford Municipal Building, 10 Robertson St., Radford. Citizens are invited to attend and allowed to speak at each meeting. See the agenda at www.radfordva.gov.
Montgomery County Board of Supervisors meeting
Public meetings are normally held the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Montgomery County Government Center, 755 Roanoke St., Christiansburg. Closed sessions begin at 6 p.m. if needed. Open sessions begin at 7:15 p.m. Citizens are invited to attend and allowed to speak at each meeting. All regular meetings of the Board of Supervisors are rebroadcast on Montgomery County Comcast and Shentel Channels 190 daily.

The council meets in regular session the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Roger E. Hedgepeth Chambers of the Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 S. Main St. These meetings are open to the public and televised live on WTOB Channel 2.
Christiansburg Town Council meeting

Radford Clothing Bank’s (RCB) annual August Kids program provides an $85 voucher for each income qualifying student in grades K – 12 attending Radford City Schools to be redeemed at the local Fairlawn Walmart to purchase new school clothing and tennis shoes for each school aged child (K-12) in a family.
