Mike Young and the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team announced the signing of 6-foot-1 guard Jaylen Curry Tuesday morning.

Curry, who recently finished his junior season at Oklahoma State, started seven times in 31 games, averaging 10.1 points per game. This past season, Curry scored in double figures 19 times including a streak of seven consecutive games down the stretch. His season-high of 30 points came in a November game against Nicholls where he went 8-11 from the field and made all 12 free throw attempts. The Charlotte native also contributed 3.2 rebounds per game and 3.5 assists for the Cowboys.

He began his collegiate career at UMass where he started 25 times in 54 career games. At UMass he scored 10.5 points per game and recorded 14.2 during his sophomore season.

Softball players honored

College Sports Communicators announced that five Radford University softball student-athletes including Abby Bossler, Grace Bechtol, Morgan Cooper, Amanda Lee and Amber Wolfe have all been named to the Academic All-District for their strong showings both on and off the field during the 2026 season.
To become eligible to earn the distinction, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, compete in 90 percent of the institution’s games played or start in 66 percent of games. Student-athletes also must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA. Only about three percent of student-athletes at the Division I level are eligible to earn the award.

Bossler started in all 51 games for the Highlanders at first base and was as reliable as it gets defensively with a .995 fielding percentage (2 errors on 375 chances) that ranks top five in single season program history. Her career defensive numbers in fielding percentage and putouts also rank top five. This year, she drew 20 walks, which ranked best on the team and top 10 in the Big South. Bossler has achieved a 3.77 GPA earning her degree in sports management and will enter the MBA program this Fall.

Bechtol was one of the best defensive short stops in Division I this past season, ranking top 10 among all student-athletes for defensive runs saved. The junior has developed into an everyday starter for Radford with a career batting average of .226, 23 RBI, 15 doubles and 24 stolen bases. Bechtol has currently earned an impressive 3.95 GPA working towards her allied health sciences degree.

In 2026 Cooper continued to be one of the Highlanders’ most reliable arms with the second-best ERA in the Big South at 3.23 and was named to the second team all-conference for a second straight year. She ranked nationally in hits allowed per, strikeout to walk ratio, and WHIP while being one of just two Radford players to ever go a full regular season without a wild pitch. In the classroom, Cooper has been exceptional earning a 3.59 GPA towards her allied health sciences degree.

Lee is an all-Big South and all-academic team member while competing as one of the Highlanders best bats in 2026. Lee is currently working towards her teaching degree with a 3.93 GPA and has been student teaching alongside her playing duties this year.

Wolfe rounds out Radford’s all-district awards after an impressive 2026. Splitting time behind the plate and in the outfield, Wolfe moved into a starting role shattering her previous career high for games started with 45. Wolfe has earned a 3.67 GPA working towards her mathematics degree.

RU athletics GPA

The almost 300 student-athletes that make up Radford University Athletics finished the academic year strong, posting an overall department grade point average (GPA) of 3.45 during the spring 2026 semester.
Fifteen of Radford’s 16 athletics program earned a 3.0 GPA or better, with 221 student-athletes earning a 3.0+, 154 earning a 3.5+, 109 earning a 3.75+ and an incredible 52 earning perfect 4.0 marks. Building off a successful fall semester that saw the same 3.45 department mark, the Highlanders increased their total student-athletes earning both 3.75+ and 4.0+ GPAs.

On the women’s side, the women’s golf program (3.85 GPA) led the department once again followed by an impressive showing from the volleyball program (3.66 GPA). Radford’s academic excellence ran deep for the women’s sports as cross country (3.65 GPA), women’s soccer (3.63 GPA), softball (3.6 GPA) and women’s lacrosse (3.51 GPA) all achieved team marks over 3.5.

The men’s golf program (3.79 GPA) boosted their previous Fall GPA by over 10 points and led the men’s side of the department while posting the second-best GPA among all teams at Radford. The baseball program (3.4 GPA) finished their academic year strong with men’s cross country and track and field (3.3 GPA) not far behind.
