Rising gas prices and ongoing uncertainty are forcing travelers to plan more carefully before hitting the road or heading to the airport.

With summer travel right around the corner, rising gas prices and ongoing uncertainty are forcing travelers to plan more carefully before hitting the road or heading to the airport. Planning in advance remains one of the most effective ways to keep costs under control, especially as fuel prices continue to fluctuate, says Virginia Tech hospitality and tourism expert Mahmood Khan.

“Early planning is the key to cutting costs for domestic or international travel,” said Khan. “Although predicting gas prices is difficult, a rough calculation helps determine the associated costs. Last-minute decisions are mostly cost-intensive.”

For both road trips and air travel, booking in advance can help travelers lock in lower prices and avoid sudden spikes. Khan said even a general estimate of fuel or transportation expenses can help travelers budget more effectively and avoid surprises.

With no clear timeline for when gas prices may stabilize, Khan advises travelers to take a realistic and flexible approach when planning trips in the coming months.

“Gas prices and related costs tend to go up faster than they come down,” he said. “Determining the average expenses before traveling is key to avoiding uncertainty.”

That means considering all major factors ahead of time, including distance, transportation options, and accommodation costs. Building a buffer into your budget can help account for unexpected increases.

Beyond rising costs, Khan emphasizes that careful planning can help travelers avoid common summer frustrations like crowds, heat, and delays. He said procrastination often leads to unexpected expenses that can take away from once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Khan also advises researching destinations beyond promotional materials and understanding entry requirements, especially for international trips. Packing essentials like water, medications, and comfortable clothing can help travelers stay prepared.

“Things take longer during peak travel seasons, so start early, understand the rules, and pack what you need, because realistic expectations, flexibility, and patience are always the best guide for summer travel,” said Khan.
