RADFORD – The Radford City Council recently approved changes to the city’s Tax Relief Program for Elderly/Disabled Persons with an increase to the yearly maximum income and total assets amount.
The program gives eligible people 100 percent tax relief from real estate taxes. The new maximum income amount is $30,000 annually and the maximum combined financial worth (assets) is $80,000.
At the April 27 city council meeting, Commissioner of the Revenue Kelsey Marletta said the income increase will help senior citizens who have had an increase in their social security checks.
“We have people in jeopardy of losing the tax relief because of an increase in their social security,” she said. “We offer a really great program and we definitely have people who really need it. We need to make sure that we are protecting our most vulnerable as much as we can.”
People are asked to please visit the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office, located at 619 2nd St., Room 161 for an application and for all necessary information that is needed to apply for the relief program. The application process is ongoing throughout the year, and a qualified applicant will be added to the program upon approval. Please call 540-731-3613 for any questions.
