Carole Jean Minard Umberger, 84, formerly of Radford, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2026, in Henrico, Virginia. She was born Jan. 23, 1942 in Bound Brook, N.J. and raised in Chester, N.J. Jean graduated from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey). She moved to Radford permanently in 1970 where she met and married E. Vance Umberger in July 1979. Jean taught for over 30 years in Radford City Schools, teaching mostly first grade, but also kindergarten and third grade at times. She also volunteered in many Richmond schools.

She was a member of Central Church Radford and spent many hours volunteering with the Elf Shelf, Radford Clothing Bank, Meals on Wheels and the Radford High School Foundation.

Survivors include her children, daughter, Rhonda Lineberry (Dwight), their children, Jesse (Kayla), children, Evelyn, Jase and Eli, and Jeremy (Allison); son, Kevin Ford (Heather); son, Brian Ford (Amy), their children, Will (Jennifer) and son Conner, and Ben; and son, Steve Ford (Jennifer), their children, Riley, Emma and Maggie; and many other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends 10 – 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Central Church Radford, 803 Wadsworth Street, Radford. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Don Shelor officiating. Interment will be private in East End Cemetery in Wytheville.

The Umberger family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
