He worked at Kollmorgen/Inland Motors at the West Main Street plant for 65 years, retiring at 84. He was a member of Grove United Methodist Church. He loved camping, fishing, woodworking, and traveling the country on Sunshine Tour buses with his wife.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Timothy Roscoe and Maude Frances Turpin Austin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Katherine Austin (James Clark), Betty Austin (Wade Richard Hurst), Peggy Austin (Warren Hubble); father and mother-in-law, Charles Franklin and Martha Hetherington; and brother-in-law, Robert Kenneth Harrison.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Hetherington Austin; daughter, Kena Marie Austin and fiancé, Robert Colley; sister-in-law, Betty Hetherington Harrison and her family in Belleville, Ill.; and his fur babies, JoJo and Burt.

The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for the care they gave Douglas the last few weeks.

The family received friends Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at Horne Funeral Home. A memorial service followed in the Chapel, with Revs. Dwayne Martin and James Sasser officiating.

The family would like to encourage everyone to wear orange to the services on Saturday in observance of Douglas’ favorite team, The Tennessee Volunteers.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Radford Fire and EMS, 1500 Wadsworth St., Radford, VA 24141.
