RADFORD – A Radford businessman has donated new scoreboards for community fields in the city after they were damaged by the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene in September 2024.
Stifel, of Radford, and its owner George “Abie” Williams purchased the new scoreboards.
“I wanted to take a second to show my appreciation to Stifel here in Radford,” said Radford Vice Mayor Seth Gillespie in a social media post. “When it became clear that the city was not in a position to replace the damaged scoreboards at Riverview and The Sports Complex, Mr. Williams and his business graciously stepped up with a donation to make it possible.”
“They are one of many, many people and businesses who have donated time, money, and efforts to our city over the years,” Gillespie continued. “It’s a part of what makes Radford so special. As we continue to rebuild Radford I do want to make sure we take the time to recognize and appreciate those who go above and beyond to help in this community. Radford appreciates all of you.”
Radford Mayor David Horton concurred.
“As we work to recover and rebuild from Hurricane Helene and other challenges we have faced as a community we are so thankful for private citizens who step up to help in the process,” he said. “A big thank you to Abie Williams and Stifel for sponsoring new scoreboards at our fields! With all the work that has been needed to restore Bisset Park and other areas along the river we have not had the resources to complete the projects. Thanks to Abie and Stifel we have new and working scoreboards!”
Flooding from Hurricane Helene caused millions of dollars in damage to the City of Radford’s riverfront areas, including Bisset and Riverview Parks, the animal shelter, the dog park and more. On Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024 the New River reached a crest of 31.03 feet, which was the highest flood stage since the 35.96-foot flood stage recorded on Aug. 14, 1940.
