Radford University basketball fans will soon have the option of an alcoholic beverage during games at the school’s famed Dedmon Center.

University officials made the announcement late last week allowing the sale of beer, wine and seltzers at men’s and women’s basketball events inside the Dedmon Center, which began at the men’s basketball game against Southern Miss on Dec 3.
Deputy Athletics Director Cory Durand said the school had been evaluating alcohol sales for many years now and they think the time is right.

“Not only is it consistent with many other sporting events around the county, but it will also add to the game day experience for our fans and students,” he said.
Fans ages 21 and over will be able to purchase alcohol at two designated mobile locations inside the Dedmon Center to ensure that alcohol sales do not disturb normal concession lines. Various brands of beer, wines and seltzers will be available for sale and will change throughout the season.

Nearby Virginia Tech began a similar practice four years ago and has not reported any major problems.

Radford University’s alcohol service policy will be enforced throughout the events. Restrictions include: Valid ID required for all purchases. All guests must be 21 years or older to purchase or consume alcohol. A limit of two beverages per transaction is allowed. Alcohol service will be discontinued after the following times: End of the third quarter for women’s basketball and second half, at the under eight-minute media timeout for men’s basketball

Radford’s concessions partner, Chartwells, will be responsible for maintaining the ABC license for alcohol sales, along with coordinating the proper training of concession staff. All sales of alcohol will be at the discretion of Chartwells who will follow all state and federal regulations.
