Academic Advising in the Highlander Success Center (HSC) won the 2025 Student Choice Award for Holistic Advising from the Advising Success Network, an honor that includes a $10,000 grant to enhance student voice and engagement initiatives.

The award winners were selected by a panel of 11 student leaders from across the nation. Just five universities were selected from nationwide applicants, with Radford University the sole winner from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our advising team and the strength of our student community,” said Kristina Contreras, assistant director of advising. “At Radford, we believe that students’ experiences, ideas and perspectives are vital to building an advising model that truly supports their goals and success. This grant allows us to continue elevating those voices and expanding opportunities for meaningful engagement.”

Radford’s application, submitted by Contreras and Advising Coordinator Lisa Hite, recognizes Radford University’s holistic and student-centered approach to advising. The collaborative work within the HSC emphasizes holistic advising practices that empower students to take an active role in shaping their academic journeys while ensuring their voices are reflected in the design and delivery of advising services.

The funds will directly support:

Joint professional development and training for both Highlander Success Center academic advisors and faculty advisors across the university.

Strategic student engagement event experiences.

Student focus groups.

A new, holistic signature spring advising event.

In addition, Radford University’s academic advising program will be featured in an ASN case study; shared on the network’s website, blog and social media platforms; and highlighted during upcoming semi-annual and annual ASN check-ins.

According to ASN, Radford University’s application “illuminated thoughtful and comprehensive efforts, innovative practices, collaboration, assessment and student-centered approaches that will serve as a model for institutions across the country.”

The academic advising submission highlighted a series of initiatives that ensure student perspectives guide advising improvements, from feedback-driven program design to the development of collaborative training that bridges the work of both professional and faculty advisors. Through these initiatives, HSC continues to elevate advising as a key component of student success, equity and belonging at Radford. Academic Advising plays a pivotal role in Radford University’s student success initiatives, providing personalized guidance and support that foster student growth.

“This award not only celebrates our dedication to holistic advising but also reinforces Radford University’s commitment in creating an environment where students are partners in their educational journey,” Hite said. “We are honored to be recognized nationally for our efforts.”

ASN, a group of national partner organizations convened by NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, supports innovative “advising redesign efforts that reflect a strong commitment to elevating student voices and perspectives.”
