Auburn High School is 2-2 on the season, the first in over three years in which the school has fielded a varsity squad.
The Auburn junior varsity put together an outstanding year in 2024, and now that group carries the torch into this season. Friday night, Auburn rolled in a 54-16 win over Castlewood.
Area Top Five: 1) Glenvar, 2) Northside, 3) William Byrd, 4) Floyd, 5) Giles/Radford
Player of week: Auburn’s Isayah Hamman rushed for 165 yards and scored two touchdowns in the school’s big win over Castlewood.
This week’s games:
Eastern Montgomery (0-4) at Auburn (2-2)
This could be the make-or-break week for both of these teams. Eastern Montgomery is in need of a win, while Auburn would like to continue its early season success. The game is also the battle for the “golden helmet,” which is given to the Montgomery County team that takes this annual contest.
Eastern Montgomery fell 26-12 to Montcalm, West Virginia.
Prediction: Eastern Montgomery 27, Auburn 26.
James River (3-1) at Radford (2-1)
James River is coming off a 50-0 shutout of Hidden Valley. Garvin Binns ran for 172 yards on 14 carries. Sam Wilson also scored twice, while QB Merit Hammons rushed for two and passed for another.
Radford picked up a win without playing as Galax forfeited its Friday night contest because of the lack of roster depth.
Prediction: Radford 38, James River 27.
Blacksburg (2-2) at Salem (0-4)
Salem is winless in its first four games, a feat not seen since 1981, and the question remains whether that will continue.
Dinwiddie shut out the Spartans 42-0 this past week.
Prediction: Blacksburg 30, Salem 21.
