Lois Carter Reynolds, age 98, of Blacksburg passed away on March 15, 2017. She was the daughter of William Thomas and Lucy Hancock Carter of Bedford County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James Andrew Reynolds.


After graduating from Radford University (Radford College), Lois continued her education by taking graduate classes from Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. She taught in the public schools of Virginia, much of that time in the Blacksburg Schools. She also taught in Raleigh, North Carolina while her husband pursued doctoral studies at North Carolina State University. Her love for teaching and for her students continued throughout her life.

As a long-time member of the Blacksburg Methodist Church, she served at one time as a Sunday School teacher. She was active in the UMW Circle V and volunteered at the Interfaith Food Pantry. A Special Missions Recognition was awarded her in 1996 by the United Methodist Women.

Lois and her husband enjoyed Rotary Club activities, playing bridge, traveling, horseback riding, and farming. Following her retirement, she traveled throughout the United States and in thirty-two countries.

Lois held various offices in the Alpha Lamba Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association, the Virginia Tech Faculty Womens Club and a special book club that dates back to 1921. She remained active in her book club, bridge club and womens group at church into her 90s.

As a supporter of the 4-H Program, the Andy Reynolds Horse Center at the W. E. Skelton Educational Conference Center was built in honor of her husband. Loiss life was dedicated to her family and friends, her church and community, and to the primary children whom she had taught for thirty-eight years.

Surviving are sisters-in-law, Christine Eubank and Estelle Karnes of Bedford and nieces and nephews of both her husband and herself. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. J. Andrew Reynolds, a sister and brother-in-law, Christine and William C. Buchanan, two brothers and sisters-in-law, William R. and Bettye Carter and S. Duval and Irene Carter.

A graveside and remembrance service will be conducted on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. in the Greenwood Cemetery in Bedford.
