Seniors Andrew Szamski and Kyle Butler along with junior J.D. Mundy were selected to VaSID All-State teams, which was announced on Thursday afternoon. The pair of seniors tallied first team status, while Mundy picked up second team honors.

Playing and starting all 57 games, Szamski proved all season that he’s one of the top players in the state. In the Big South, he ranked third in runs scored (54) and in runs batted in (53), seventh in hits (70) and home runs (10) and 10th in slugging percentage (.496). Szamski also led the Highlanders with a .307 batting average. Playing primarily in right field, he tallied 128 putouts, five assists and a .985 fielding percentage.

The First Team All-VaSID utility player, Butler, turned in his best season as a Highlander this year. He split time between second base and center field, playing in and starting 56 games. He hit .257 with four home runs, 30 runs batted in and seven stolen bases while providing a .989 fielding percentage. His 47 runs scored ranked ninth in the conference.

Mundy became an immediate impact bat after transferring to Radford in the offseason. In Big South statistical rankings, he sat second in slugging percentage (.588), second in runs batted in (55), tied for third in doubles (17), fifth in home runs (13) and third in total bases (113). A native of nearby Roanoke, Mundy played in and started 56 games for the Highlanders, earning an on-base percentage of .412 with 37 runs scored and four stolen bases.

This marks the fifth straight season that Radford players have been named to the all-state team and the third consecutive season with three players honored.
