On Wednesday, March 22, in cooperation with the Virginia Commission of the Arts and Radford City Schools, the Radford City Schools Partners for Excellence Foundation hosted its second annual Virginia Opera Day on the high school stage.

In the morning, Belle Heth students enjoyed “The Three Little Pigs,” music by W. A. Mozart/Words & Story Adaptation by John Davies Touring. This universal classic and its timeless characters provide the perfect backdrop for this pastiche opera, brilliantly interwoven with scenes by Mozart.

In the afternoon, Dalton Intermediate and Radford High School students were treated to “An Afternoon of Opera,” also performed by members of the Virginia Commission of Arts.

In the afternoon, Dalton Intermediate and Radford High School students were treated to “An Afternoon of Opera,” highlighting some of the most beloved arias and ensemble numbers that opera has to offer, as well as popular musical theater show tunes.

The programs feature the Virginia Opera’s nationally recognized Henderson Foundation Emerging Artists Program, with optional play-by-play commentary that gives audience members insight into this repertoire.

According to Partners Foundation Board Member Lee Slusher, “the Foundation is proud to bring diverse learning opportunities to our students. Real world experiences are important to children’s educational growth. The delight on the faces of the elementary students was wonderful to watch! They appeared totally enthralled with the entire production.”
